The mandate of RTI Foundation is the effective and articulate use of the Right to Information Act and promotion of informed participation. We believe that the phase of virtual accountability of the government to its people in this democracy can now be put to an end since the era of actual accountability has dawned with the Right to Information Act. “Resolving to Transform India” being our motto, we believe in increasing public awareness regarding their right to access information for the actual realization of their social, economic and political rights.
We aim to use the Right to Information Act not merely as a tool to prod the government from time to time by installing in it the fear of the people but by utilizing the Act to bring the government closer to the people in terms of transparency, accountability and access to public information. It needs no mention that the Act reminds the government of its representative character and its answerability to those who elect it. If anything, the Right to Information Act has only acted to further facilitate the democratization of governance in India, thus discouraging the practice of holding back from the people or preventing them from seeking relevant information. RTI Foundation’s objective is to channelize this legislation’s coercive powers in such manner that maintaining secrecy and excluding the citizen from information does not remain an option anymore. |
