Government Schemes
- Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan
- The scheme was launched in 2001 with the following goals:
- All 6-14 age children in school/EGS (Education Guarantee Scheme) centre/Bridge Course by 2005
- Bridge all gender and social category gaps at primary stage by 2007 and at elementary education level by 2010.
- Universal retention by 2010.
- Focus on elementary education of satisfactory quality with emphasis on education for life.
The programme covers the entire country with special focus on educational need of girls, SCs/STs and other children in difficult circumstances. The programme seeks to open new schools in those places which do not have schooling facilties and strengthen existing school infrastructure through provision of additional class rooms, toilets, drinking water, maintenance grant and school improvement grant.
- Mid Day Meal Scheme
- This scheme covers nearly 12 crore children and has emerged as the world’s largest feeding programme and has the following objectives:
- To boost universalization of primary education (classes I-V) by improving enrolment, attendance, retention, and learning levels of children especially those belonging to the disadvantaged sections
- To improve nutritional status of students of primary stage, and
- To provide nutritional support to students of primary stage in drought-affected areas during summer vacation also.
The scheme is being implemented in a decentralized manner with the involvement of local level agencies such as village panchayats, village education committees
- National Literacy Mission
- NLM set up in May 1988 aims to attain sustainable threshold level of 75 per cent literacy by 2007 by imparting functional literacy to non literates in the age group of 15-35 years, which is the productive and the reproductive age group and constitutes a major segment of the work force.
The Total Literacy Campaign is the principal strategy of NLM for eradication of illiteracy. These campaigns are area-specific, time-bound, participative, cost-effective and outcome oriented. These are implemented through district level literacy committees as autonomous bodies, having due representation of all sections of society.
The National Literacy Mission aims at ensuring that the total Literacy campaigns and the Post-literacy Programmes successfully move on to Continuing Education, which provide life long learning. At present, TLCs are being implemented in 110 districts and PLPs in 177 districts of the country.
